It appears that he is an active mountaineer (although I am not sure
that most mountaineers also like to explore the Antarctic!) He is also
described as a gifted photographer. Given all of this, he is probably
in a Who's Who or something like that.

I think the kids are lucky that they weren't given Mongolia as a middle
name. He was there in 1992, but appears to have named the daughters
(middle names anyway) for more recent expeditions.

As for the family, there appears to be a Landed Gentry family by that
name. It has produced at least one General and one professor of music.
Burke's Landed Gentry, anyone?
