I suspect that in the Wiki entry
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adrian_Carton_De_Wiart
the reference to Anthony Loyd as his grandson should be as his
great-grandson.

Loyd has referred in his books and articles to his illustrious
ancestor, but I am not sure as to how the descent goes - from his Loyd
father or his mother who is described as Mrs Deirdre Brown. Loyd is
himself the ex-husband of Lady Sophie Hamilton, only daughter of the
Duke of Abercorn. [British and Russian royal references may be inserted
here as desired!]

Adrian Carton de Wiart, of a prominent Belgian family, was married 1908
to Countess Frederica Fugger von Babenhausen, otherwise Friederike
Maria Karoline Henriette Rosa Sabina Franziska (1887 Klagenfurt -1949
Vienna), eldest dau of the 1st Fuerst Fuegger von Babenhausen by his
wife Pss Eleonore zu Hohenlohe-Bartenstein. The couple had two
daughters.

I met Carton de Wiart's British godson at a very recent dinner party;
he told me that his only memory of his godfather was receiving a live
duck as a present!

Carton de Wiart (VC, KBE, CB, CMG, DSO) is one of the most remarkable
and romantic characters of the period. He sported an eye patch (just
one of the countless war-related injuries he suffered--twice wounded in
somaliland, severely wounded on the western front, eight times further
wounded) and a fine moustache and was renowned as one of the bravest
men of his generation. He served in the Boer War and in India, fought
the "Mad Mullah" and saw action at Passchendale, was appointed head of
the British Military Mission to Poland, and (during WWII) commanded the
Central Norwegian Expeditionary Force, had a plane crash and was
captured by the Italians. He ended his career as Churchill's personal
envoy to Chiang-kai-shek.

Carton de Wiart fell in love with Poland whilst head of the Mission and
grew very close to the Poles themselves. Prince Karol Radziwill, who
had inherited a 500,000 acre estate, gave Carton de Wiart a sizable
plot of land on the estate including an island, gratis. Turning his
back on London society Carton built a house on the remote spot and
lived in Poland for twenty years. He occupied himself primarily in
splendid isolation shooting and fishing. But he also became a favourite
with many of the great families, including the Potockis at their grand
estate of Lancut. At a dinner at the British Embassy in Warsaw he even
agreed to second Count Adam Zamoyski in a duel with Prince Lubomirski.

His memoirs, with a foreward written by Churchill, are entitled: HAPPY
ODYSSEY.
