It probably depends on whether you like the beach or the mountains best. But today, I think that Osborne Estate (which is open to the public) is about 350 or so acres, consisting mostly of the House and gardens. Balmoral Estate is about 50,000 acres, and in addition to the castle has many homes and residences, gardens, hunting-grounds, fishing-streams etc., with herds of deer, cattle, livestock, etc. I imagine that the present royal family prefers the vacation and recreational opportunities that it offers.
