The Associated Press and others confirm the death of King Michael of
Romania, who reigned twice in his father's lifetime and never after his
father's death...his father had been bypassed when Michael was first
enthroned, then got himself installed anyway, then abdicated as World War
II got underway.

King Michael helped oust a Nazi-sympathizing government in 1944,but
the Soviets came in,installed Communists, and had him pushed out in
1947 (an extorted abdication). He had five daughters and the laws did
not allow reigning queens...he considered his eldest daughter (an
ex-girlfriend of former British Prime Minister) his heir.

He was one of the longest-lived Kings ever recorded, but had not
reigned since he was 26.

The World Trade Center towers MUST rise again,
at least as tall as before...or terror has triumphed.

It was with great sadness that I received this news.

Once that sewer of a Communist dictator had been shot and thus Roumania relieved of its scourge, King Michael should immediately have been invited to regain his throne. The fact that politicians dithered and finally never did allow that throne to be regained means they will always be thought of with contempt.

To some degree of compensation, King Michael was eventually afforded the dignity of being allowed to return to his country and some of his property was restored.

His memory will forever be in the hearts of most Roumanians and those abroad who respect and admire a man of true courage.

R.I.P.

In all honesty,I blame his daughter for this.
She visited the country just after Ceaucescu was overthrown and
declared there was "no question of restoring the monarchy",letting
things stabilize under the ex-communist Iliescu rather than even
passively riding a wave.

What was the opinion of Elizabeth II of King Mihai and his burial?

The people her age are getting scarce and their burials are therefore important. After Mihai, I think there is only one other person left alive who was Head of State before Elizabeth II. Gyanendra.

It's too bad his daughters all married commoners.

I like the idea of monarchy; it's the royals I have a problem with, marrying beneath their station. Shame!
