Our papers say that Mrs (Betsy) Duncan Smith is related to the Earls Spencer
somehow. Does anyone know how that is - I'm just mildly curious!

I don't have a Burke's or Debrett's handy, but this paragraph may assist
those who do.

"Betsy Duncan Smith looks like the perfect Tory wife. The daughter of a
hereditary peer, Lord Cottesloe, and the seventh cousin of the late Diana,
Princess of Wales, she is, like Jane Austen's Emma Wodehouse, handsome,
clever and rich."

That's it, thank you. I knew her parents name began with C but couldn't for
the life of me remember it.

I can find a connection -- albeit distant!

1st Earl Gower
|
1st Marquess of Stafford
|
Lady Charlotte Leveson-Gower = 6th Duke of Beaufort
|
Lady Charlotte Somerset = 4th Baron Calthorpe
|
6th Baron Calthorpe = Maud Duncombe
|
Hon Dorothy Gough-Calthorpe = 5th Earl of Malmesbury
|
Lady Elizabeth Harris = (1) Hon John Fremantle
|
5th Baron Cottesloe = Elizabeth Barker
|
Hon Elizabeth (Betsy) Fremantle = Iain Duncan Smith, MP

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1st Earl Gower
|
Lady Gertrude Leveson-Gower = 4th Duke of Bedford
|
Francis, Marquess of Tavistock
|
6th Duke of Bedford
|
Lady Louisa Jane Russell = 1st Duke of Abercorn
|
2nd Duke of Abercorn
|
3rd Duke of Abercorn
|
Lady Cynthia Hamilton = 7th Earl Spencer
|
8th Earl Spencer
|
Lady Diana Frances Spencer

By my reckoning Betsy Duncan Smith is a seventh cousin of the late
Earl Spencer in their descent from the 1st Earl Gower, and a seventh
cousin once removed of Diana, Princess of Wales.

Perhaps someone knows of a closer connection. I think that perhaps
everybody in Debrett's/Burke's is at least a seventh cousin of the
late Princess!

<snip of requested info!>

Thank you, Michael. It's one of those little drips and drops that
newspapers publish but without explanation.
