The leading monarchist movement of Lithuania, The Royal House of Lithuania Association, is honored to inform that H.S.H.Prince Inigo von Urach, Count of Württemberg, great-grandson of the last King Mindaugas II of Lithuania , was elected and recognized the legitimate pretender of the Lithuanian Royal Throne.

For many centuries Lithuania has been shaping its state. Revolution filled the air at the end of the 1800s and beginning of the 1900s, destroying many monarchies. The majority of the revolting nations replaced their thrones with communist governments. Despite that, on June 4, 1918 the Council of Lithuania voted to invite Prince Wilhelm of Urach, Count of Württemberg, to become the king of a newly independent Lithuania. He was elected on 11 July 1918, taking the name King Mindaugas II. Through marriage to Duchess Amalie in Bavaria (1865–1912), is related, also, to the Lithuanian princess Louise Caroline Radvila of Biržai.It is very symbolic that the rare documents such as the letter of Pope Benedict XV, welcoming Wilhelm's selection as the future king of Lithuania (the copy of the document could be found in Stuttgart archive) and letters between General von Ludendorff and Swiss government stating the election of the king in 1918 (courtesy The Lithuanian cultural center in Germany) become known to Lithuanian public.
Despite the global economic and political crises, the leading monarchies of the world manage to overcome these hardships with much dignity, through giving their nations the sense of unity, missing in other modern forms of government. In Lithuania, we may, recently, observe the active revival of the monarchist’s movement and the public opinion steadily grows favorable to monarchy re-establishment. We agree with the majority of Lithuanians, who believes that the throne pretender choice should be based not only on dynastic principles but also on ability to serve to the people successfully. The Royal House of Lithuania Association(headed by H.E. Stanislovas Švedarauskas), the oldest and most reputable monarchist’s movement of Lithuania, did a profound case study of the potential legitimate candidates and arrived at the conclusion that H.S.H. Prince Inigo von Urach, Count of Württemberg suites for position of the Lithuanian throne pretender more then anybody else.
Inigo von Urach (born 1962) is the direct descendant of the last Lithuanian king Mindaugas II, Roman Catholic, family man and dedicated father of 3 children (2 of them-boys). He is connected to Lichtenstein, Luxembourg, British, Russian, Monaco, Bavarian and Portuguese Royal families by birth. The Prince is actively working on positive country image establishment leading to deeper European integration. He supports Lithuanian cultural center in Germany, learning its language and culture. Inigo is constantly visiting the country of his ancestors, meet Lithuanians from a wide spectrum of life, understands their interests and daily problems. His social activities gained interest of the international media, people’s love and recognition (he is a honorary citizen of Kaunas town). The throne pretender should, obligatory, have successful military career to be able to play an important role in recognizing and supporting the work of the Armed Services. Inigo is the only von Urach family member to hold high military rank, serving currently in the army, and regularly participating in NATO military exercises. Finally, His Highness is willing to carry out important work in the areas of public and charitable service, through partnership with Royal House of Lithuania Association in the frame of the joint socio-cultural project called ”King Mindaugas Institute”.
Following the formal offer, done by the most numerable monarchist movement of Lithuania and recognition of his high statues, H.S.H. Prince Inigo von Urach, Count of Württemberg officially accepted the position. His full title since now will be: H.R.H. Grand Duke Inigo of Lithuania, Fürst v. Urach,Count of Württemberg. The Association and His Royal Highness are now partnering for bringing to Lithuania maximum social prosperity, national unity strengthening and stability effect regardless of the monarchy re-establishment.

In the first place, the words "legitimate pretender" are oxymoronic; pretenders intrinsically lack legitimacy because they have no state to back their claims.
Second, there was never a "Kingdom of Lithuania". Lithuania was a Grand Duchy (Magnus Ducatus) bound in union with the Kingdom of Poland, and, together with Poland, ceased to exist when the country was annexed by Russia in 1795.
The so-called "Kingdom of Lithuania" which created the spurious title which is claimed for "Mindaugas II" (sc. Wilhelm Herzog von Urach) was a fake, no more real than the "Kingdom of Finland" with its "Väinö I" (Friedrich Karl Landgraf von Heßen-Kaßel) or the Vereinigtes Baltisches Herzogthum with its Duke Adolf Friedrich (cf. the decades-later "Kingdom of Croatia" with its "Tomislav II", Aimone, Duca di Savoia-Aosta). These were all the pathetic paper creations of a dying Reich. None of the recipients of these tinsel crowns could be bothered even to visit their supposed domains -- which were in reality simply territories formerly controlled by Russia and occupied by the German army from 1917-1918.
Any Lithuanian who backed ceding control of his country to a German usurper with no roots or interest in his country would have to be out of his mind.
Actually, early medieval Lithuania was in fact briefly a kingdom, for about 10 years.. When Duke Mindaugas of Lithuania converted to Christianity in 1251, Pope Innocent IV issued a bull proclaiming the Kingdom of Lithuania. In 1253 Mindaugas was crowned as king. However, following his assassination in 1263, his successors fought among themselves, and relapsed into paganism. Eventually a new dynasty, the Gediminids, came to power. The first Gediminids, Vytenis and Gediminis, were pagans. They used the title of Grand Duke, as it was the traditional title of Lithuanian rulers, and it would have been quite irregular for pagan European monarchs to use the title of king, which at that time had some christian connotations.

Grand Duke Vytautas (1392-1430) did attempt to claim the title of king, and he was proclaimed King of Lithuania by the Holy Roman Emperor, though he was never crowned. He was addressed sometimes in Latin documents with the title 'rex', including communications with the papacy. Eventually Vytautas' nephew Jogaila, who converted to Christianity, was proclaimed King of Poland, and Vytautas ruled in Lithuania as his vassal, with the traditional title of Grand Duke.

Would the peoples of Lithuania accept a German as their King? I thought the days of finding some Royal floating around doing nothing in particular and offering him a Crown were long since over? Is there no-one suitably qualified in Lithuania if the peoples wished a monarchy? It all seems rather strange to me.

A Czartoryski or Radziwiłł would make much more sense. Sense however, has never been a strong point for these wannabe 'monarchs'.

Yes, it makes as much sense as asking me to be the King (I'm too busy at the moment, and besides it's too cold over there)

The logic used to be that they usually went for a foreign Royal because of the infighting a jealousies that would be aroused by picking one local noble family over another. That and the mistaken belief that hitching one's waggon to that of some great power would save one from a beastly neighbour, when the chips went down. Much in the way that in recent years Finns and Eastern Europeans were led to believe that if they joined the EU, the EU would send in its non-existant divisions to save them. I can just imagine it now, all the brave Irish volunteering to man in order to die to save Estonia from the beastly Russians.

Quite why a Czartoryski or Radziwiłł would be more suitable than a German is open to question. The Czartoryski may well have a Ruthenian descent in the dim, dark, distant past, but they were Eastern Orthodox until about the 17th century and their estates were in the Ukraine and the Polish Ukrainian border lands from the 14th, not Lithuania.

As for the Radziwiłł, they mere fact that they know themselves by that name and not Radvila, tells you where their loyalties lie.

On June 4, 1918 the Council of Lithuania voted to invite Prince Wilhelm of Urach, Count of Württemberg, to become the king of a newly independent Lithuania. He was elected on 11 July 1918, taking the name King Mindaugas II, its a HISTORICAL FACT.Upon that descision, Pope Benedict XV welcomed Wilhelm's selection as the future king of Lithuania. Therefore the title is and will never be fake. Inigo von Urach is constantly visiting the country of his ancestors, meet Lithuanians from a wide spectrum of life, understands their interests and daily problems. His social activities gained interest of the international media, people’s love and recognition (he is a honorary citizen of Kaunas town). He supports Lithuanian cultural center in Germany, learning its language

The Jagellonid Dynasty of Poland/Lithuania was directly descended from
Gediminas. The Jagellonid monarchs intermarried with other European
royalty, and probably most present-day royalty has some sort of
descent from them. Empress Maria Theresa of Austria (from whom all of
the current Hapsburgs descend) was a descendant of King Kazimierz IV
(Jagellon) of Poland. Probably some descent from the Jagellonids could
also be deduced for the prinz von Urach/Wurttemberg mentioned
above.

The Czartoryski family has an agnatic (male-line) descent from
Gediminas, though over the centuries they've become ethnically and
culturally Polish.
