Prince Dundar Ali Osman,born December 30th 1930,
died January 18th 2021 according to various media sources.

By the house laws of the Ottoman dynasty(House of Osman)
as practiced from the 19th century onward,he became the
Head of House (the would be Emperor and Caliph) in 2017
when the death of Prince Bayezid left him the oldest surviving
member of his generation of male-line descent from Mahmud II.

Was he literally a pretender to the throne? Did anybody recognize him as
a prince? Did he even live in Turkey?

He lived there for a while in recent years, though he died in Damascus.
(For over fifty years the family were banned from living in Turkey).

Ah. I didn't recall that the banishment had been lifted.
